Viking Project Mission Analysis and Design Documents Collection, 1969-1975.

This collection has been assembled from several separate accessions and reflects a logical organization of disparate Viking materials. The documents in the collection are arranged in three series and then chronologically within those series. The series names are: (1) Mission/Systems Design and Review Documents; (2) Mission Design Team Meeting Minutes; and (3) Operations and Launch Readiness Reviews. Specific records in this collection are mission and systems design documents for the Viking spacecraft, lander, and orbiter. Among them are technical documents and presentation materials explaining mission design proposals, design requirements and specifications, design review documents, design review action items, and launch. Two oversized documents in the collection are United States Geological Service Interagency Reports entitled "Astrogeology 59" and "Astrogeology 60." Both of these are geologic maps and terrain analysis data for Viking landing sites on Mars considered in 1972 and 1973. Also included are minutes of the Martin Marietta Corporation Lander Mission Design Team Meetings from September 1973 through March 1975. The minutes contain brief statements on the status and progress of designing the landers. B. Gentry Lee was the Mission Operations and Design Team Manager at Martin Marietta Corporation. Most of the documents contain at least one identifying number, usually a Viking Orbiter Data Index number. These are usually written in pencil in the lower right or left hand corner of the first page. The Archives has a nine-volume printout of Viking documents listed by Data Index number. The listing of index numbers, although in ascending sequential order, is discontinuous. Number series are repeated several times throughout the index.
